Michael Coleman's naturalistic renderings of the American West remind us of another era. Yet, in many ways Coleman has lived the world he paints—born in Provo, Utah, Coleman has enjoyed an active life outdoors, fishing, hunting, shooting, and trapping in the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Captivated early on by the tranquil beauty of his surroundings, Coleman took to carrying a sketchbook with him and began carefully recording the flora and fauna he encountered. Over his career Coleman has become intimately acquainted with the works and techniques of the 19th and 20th-century masters, notably those of the Hudson River School, Henry Farny, and Carl Rungius. Subdued yet profuse with detail and great depth, Coleman’s entrancing depictions of the wildlife, landscapes, and peoples of the American Southwest—rendered in oil, gouache, watercolor, and metal—have earned him national acclaim.
"His art lends contemporary credence to the already vital and relished artistic heritage of the West."
